When first starting out as an affiliate, many beginners fall into the trap of just partnering with the best brands or choose niche markets that are already overly saturated only to struggle later without considering key success factors such as the following:-
- Promote Products You Believe In: Be excited about the products you promote in terms of what you’re selling or offering to people. If you don’t believe in the product itself, it will be difficult to convert other people and potential buyers.
- Product Relevance & Demand: You want to ensure that the products or services you promote are relevant to your audience. If no one is searching for it, it will be hard to make sales.
- Geographical Representation: Similarly, you don’t want to sell a product that is oversaturated so you need to consider whether there are actually enough people out there that you can serve with your product or offer.
How To Avoid This Mistake:
- Use Google Trends before you represent or invest and sell any product or offer and take note of industries that provide surveys, statistics, reports etc for any business or niche area that you might be considering.
- Pick a profitable niche and more importantly consider the Problem that the product or service is solving. Regardless of whether it’s a SaaS, Coaching or Education affiliate program – can you answer the question - ‘what problem is that product or service solving?
- Pick something you can enjoy and has a good audience size
- Research profitable Affiliate Programs before committing by considering their commission structures, their marketing systems etc.

Unlike other business models, you don’t have the headache of creating a product, or having to deal with complicated technical stuff, shipping costs and then having to fulfil your products or services.
This all sounds so incredibly simple and amazing, right? Or maybe not!

Speaking from personal experience: I remember when I first started out and wasn’t getting the results I had hoped for, I began to question similar stats and the positive benefits that I kept hearing about & also hoped to achieve but somehow they didn’t seem to mirror with my reality together with the many thoughts that would often creep into my mind, along the lines of…
- "So why am I not finding it so simple and easy?"
- "Why am I still struggling to generate profit & get consistent sales?"
- "How much more time and money do I need to spend on yet another strategy, yet another campaign that doesn’t appear to be working for me."
- "Why do I sometimes feel like throwing my laptop out of the window in utter frustration – occasionally!"

A few years ago, I realised that I just wasn’t where I wanted to be in life especially financially and knew it was time for me to take control of my financial future. I was in my early 50s and even if retirement seemed a long way off, it suddenly didn’t feel that way! I knew I couldn’t continue to rely on traditional income streams living paycheque to paycheque and with minimal savings.
Simply put – somewhere along the path of trying to navigate my way through life, budgeting and investing had simply not made it to the top of my priority list and I was now beginning to feel as if I might’ve left it a bit late to start building a golden nest egg.
I soon discovered that I belonged to a growing trend of similar people often described as Late Financial Bloomers i.e those who actively started managing their money & building wealth later in life.) It's Never too late!
Well, I certainly knew that...
I needed something that would offer me true financial freedom – not just passive income that would cover my current lifestyle but also my - Ideal Lifestyle!
I was no longer comfortable with just managing, getting by financially. Something had to change -This surely couldn’t be as ‘Good as it Gets!’
I guess the shift in mindset, eventually propelled me to do something different as I began to think differently – I realised that I could no longer unlearn this new way of thinking.
So, After much researching on the internet, I came across different business models but I knew I had to find one that suited my current lifestyle that I could do around the day job, so an online business model made sense to me. Eventually, I discovered affiliate marketing as a way to build income streams and create financial security. It seemed like the perfect solution!
Alas not! Reality soon hit hard and I struggled immensely!
I found myself in a situation many beginners find themselves in when starting out:
- I wasted a lot of time and money on strategies that didn’t work or even if they did, I just found myself missing steps in the process and just repeatedly compounded the same mistakes – a total nightmare!
- Converting potential leads into buyers felt like an impossible task.
- I made very few sales which didn’t even nearly cover my costs month by month… let alone generate any profit.
- I was so frustrated and simply felt so stuck! BUT, I just refused to give up!
Deep down, I knew that Affiliate Marketing was a great business model, my approach simply wasn’t working and I was determined to figure it out and find the right way to achieve affiliate marketing success.
So, to cut a long story short!
I did eventually figure out what actually works!
I realised that Affiliate Marketing wasn’t rocket science but there was a 'science' to learning how to market effectively as an affiliate - the right way
i.e how to attract the right audience, how to generate high-ticket commissions and how to build an income stream that works on auto pilot – not magic!
I discovered proven, modern day marketing strategies that actually make affiliate marketing work effectively in a changing world i.e today’s digital world.
It was also hard for me to admit at the time....But I also learnt to get out of my own way and leverage support including professional coaching.
Putting it bluntly - I needed all the Help I could get!
I also realised that Affiliate Marketing is not a get-rich quick scheme - It takes time and I'm still evolving on my affiliate journey but now...

How? Because, the people in the organisation that you’re representing do the rest of the work e.g the mentoring, the selling, the supporting, updates etc.
Unfortunately, this is not always obvious to the eyes of the new affiliate, I’ve been there!
We are too busy trying to figure out so many new concepts at the start, with our head in the sand….believing that we can handle it all by ourselves and hence we miss out on the obvious things that are available in terms of leveraging people to help us achieve our goals as an affiliate.
Insight: Whenever successful affiliates share their stories and are asked for the one thing that they wish they could’ve done differently at the start of their affiliate journey - they mostly respond by saying...
“I wish I had asked for help a lot sooner!”
How To Avoid This Mistake:
- Know who you are affiliating or partnering with: Take time before or when you first join the affiliate program to understand the people in the organisation that you’re representing. This is such a valid lesson that I eventually learnt.
- At least have a clear idea of the affiliate programs Mission, Vision.
- Never underestimate the fact that a good affiliate program is there for you to leverage the people in terms of their expertise, wisdom and experience. They want you to succeed.
TIP: In a nutshell, it’s the people in the organisation or program that will determine the effectiveness behind a successful affiliate business or not.

Whether you’re just starting out as a new affiliate or you might have some experience, you’ve probably noticed by now that some affiliate programs sell better than others and offer their affiliates more tools, systems, tracking tools, resources & collateral etc.
Well, when I first started out as an affiliate I didn’t even know that it was important for me to understand the SYSTEM of Selling being used by the affiliate program. This lack of knowledge led me down the path of compounding the same mistakes over and over again.
I had no idea that successful affiliate programs actually have a Proven System of selling online that their affiliates can leverage.

- Do your homework before representing the affiliate company and understand their system of selling and what they make available for their affiliates.
- Collateral & Resources: Make sure they are giving you the collateral that you can use and direct targeted buyers and convert them into customers; a good tracking system for you to analyse your results and performance. (Data-driven decisions help you to maximise your affiliate earnings over time.)
- Utilise their marketing funnels and landing pages that convert i.e that you can use to market their products and offers.
- Let the System Do The Selling: Always remember that your main job as an affiliate is to put quality information out there to get interested people to make an informed decision.
TIP: Remember, the beauty about having an effective affiliate marketing system in place, is so that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel!


Not all affiliate programs are created equal especially when it comes to making sales.
Different programs offer different commission structures and rates and naturally the higher the commission, the more you’ll earn per sale.
I’ve been there too...
There are so many things to consider when you’re new to affiliate marketing so I understand why many new affiliates tend to fall into the trap of ONLY sticking to low ticket products ($5-$50 commissions) when starting out.
How To Avoid This Mistake:
- The Power of Monthly Residual Income: Research affiliate programs that offer recurring commissions as another type of commission structure on top of the high ticket commissions.
- Research and Join standout affiliate programs that are known for offering high ticket commission payouts/subscriptions for promoting their affiliate offers e.g CJ Affiliate, Launch You Affiliate Program.
When I first started out with Affiliate Marketing as a beginner, I often wondered just how successful affiliates were able to create profitable revenue businesses month in month out, on autopilot etc.
I soon discovered it was simply by choosing High Ticket Product Suite Affiliate Programs & becoming High Ticket Affiliate Marketers.
You can imagine as someone who was fairly new to affiliate marketing, this was an unknown concept to me and a complete Light Bulb Moment…..

Let’s take a look at the following example:
- If a company has 4 products and the entry product is the cheapest that pays a $100 commission (Which is pretty consistent with top affiliate programs out there today).
- They have a 2nd product that pays you a $1000 commission,
- 3rd product that pays you $2000 commission and a
- 4th product that could potentially pay a $4000 commission.
Now then....If you as an affiliate has a customer interested in your offer who bought the $100 commissionable product also bought the $1000 commissionable product and then went on to buy other products…this will completely change the game for you as an affiliate!
Naturally, not everyone is going to buy multiple products but compared to a Single Ticket Product you now have the power and leverage with just one customer to 4X your marketing dollar.
Focus on these key points to avoid this mistake:
- Choose an affiliate program that has high value products, high return commissionable products in your chosen niche.
- Choose a program that has multiple products that you can offer to solve your customer’s problem better.
- Choose affiliate programs that offer recurring commissions as another type of commission that works on top of the high-ticket commissions.

Understandably, many new affiliates invest a lot of time and effort running campaigns, learning marketing, staring at the laptop and checking stats constantly which can take a lot of time.
Consequently, beginners tend to underestimate the effectiveness of email marketing believing it to be a bit outdated and maybe not the most interesting thing to be getting on with when getting up and running with the new business.
However, it is just as relevant today than it ever has been. Afterall, ‘email’ is still at the absolute centre of everything we do online today – If you think about it, we’re still using & need email addresses to sign into nearly everything online.
So.....if you’re not utilising email marketing as part of your affiliate strategy you could be missing out and leaving money on the table.
How To Avoid This Mistake:
- Develop the mindset and tactics around building a successful marketing list for your niche on total autopilot by leveraging email marketing tools e.g lead capture pages, lead magnets and an autoresponder that enables you to professionally send out emails to people at mass. (e.g mailchimp, aweber etc).
- Build a Relationship with the List: Always remember that the secret is in getting people to know, like and trust you or the brand that you’re building with honesty and integrity. Send valuable content to your subscribers.

It is a skillset that has a very steep learning curve but with the right guidance & mindset you can learn and improve on your success.
That said....when you’re newly starting out there are all sorts of concepts to get to grips with which can be overwhelming. Many beginners easily get discouraged and unfortunately even quit after a few months because they expect and don’t see instant results and quick sales.
